| Winco Generators |
The Winco was founded and established by John Albers and his brother Gerhard Albers, natives of Cherokee, Iowa. It was in 1927 that the Albers brothers developed “The Wincharger”. This is a type of wind generator that is primarily used to recharge their radio’s 6-volt battery. Soon after that, few friends and neighbors became interested with the new gadget and randomly began to request the brothers to make Winchargers also to use for their radio batteries.
In 1935, the Albers brothers established and introduced the Wincharger into the business world. This was when Wincharger Company or simply Winco started to its operation. They had put up a manufacturing plant in Iowa somewhere in Sioux City. In 1935, a little later after establishing the plant, Zenith Corporation, a radio manufacturer got interested in the company. Zenith purchased a part of the company’s shares and stock just to control the product to partner with its radios. Around late 1937, two years after the first partial purchase, the Zenith Radio Corporation finally purchased the rest of the shares and stocks of the Wincharger Company. With the full purchase, it has full control of the plant’s operation and had started to develop more products.
With Zenith in the lead, it had established its first three assembly lines, for a 12-volt, a 32-volt, and the 110-volt generators. These products were now capable to provide power to light up homes during a power interruption. The Zenith Company also played an important role during World War 2. It developed the “Dynamotor” which was used in military ships and aircrafts.
Winco is now in its 80th year in the industry and continues to develop and manufacture home and commercial standby power generators. |
